Gonzales spared no-confidence vote...Court rules in "enemy combatant" case

CAPITOL HILL (AP) The no-confidence vote on Alberto Gonzales is a no-go. The 53-to-38 Senate vote to move the resolution to full debate fell seven short of the 60 required. But the attorney general's troubles are not over. More congressional hearings are scheduled and an internal department investigation continues.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) A rebuke to the Bush administration for holding "enemy combatant" suspect Ali al-Marri (ah-LEE' al-MAH'-ree) in military custody without charges. A federal appeals panel in Richmond, Virginia, ruled the federal Military Commissions Act doesn't strip civilian residents of the U-S of the right to challenge their accusers in court.

LOS ANGELES (AP) The family of a mentally disabled man has filed suit claiming federal and Los Angeles County officials mistakenly had an American citizen deported. The suit says U-S officials should help find him in Mexico. His brother says Pedro Guzman, who can't read, signed a paper allowing himself to be deported.
