Associated Press ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece (AP) At least 60 people are now dead from wildfires that have been burning across much of southern Greece. A fire department spokesman says the fires are "an unprecedented disaster." More than 40 major fires are burning out of control. Water and foam were dropped to protect the birthplace of the Olympics. BOISE, Idaho (AP) Idaho's Sun Valley ski resort began running snowmaking equipment to protect against surging flames from a wildfire driven by winds so high the fire can't be attacked by aircraft. A thousand families have been evacuated and Idaho's governor is urging sightseers to stay away. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Ohio Governor Ted Strickland is hoping flood ravaged parts of his state will soon be declared a federal disaster area. Residents were busy cleaning and drying their waterlogged homes Sunday. Strickland says the flooding was "absolutely devastating." HUNTINGTON, Utah (AP) It's been three weeks with no signs of life since a cave-in trapped six men in a Utah coal mine. But the search will continue, officials say a seventh hole will be punched down into the mountain and a special robotic camera will be lowered into a previously drilled hole. CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) The son of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan has been seriously injured in a car crash in Clearwater, Florida. Police say a car driven at a high rate of sped flipped over and was destroyed. Investigators think the accident was caused by excessive speed and do not think alcohol was involved. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 08-26-07 2344CDT |
