Keeping Your Pets Warm This WinterDec 3 2007 11:09PM
KXMCTV Minot Some dog breeds CAN handle it... Hearty, robust sporting breeds such as the labrador retriever have the coat and the body to defend against the cold - as long as they're active. Other smaller dogs, such as toy and show-type breeds require a little assistance with the cold. Putting clothing on dogs may be silly to some, but if your dog is cold, it could be necessary... (Dr. Amy Reese, Veterinarian) "on a small dog if I were going to take him for a walk...we would put on a coat and depending on the temperature consider booties they're hard to train sometimes...now I have a labrador retriever and in the cold...that it's been recently in the teens, I wouldn't worry about him if he's active...now if he were in the backyard I would want to make sure that he had protection...he could get out of the cold it would be insulated and he'd be able to curl up and protect himself." Cats on the other hand are pretty cautious as animals, so if it is too cold for them, generally they won't go out. If they do, leave a garage door open a bit so they have somewhere to get out of the cold.
