Fargo Bank Encourages Employees to Pay it ForwardDec 17 2007 11:36PM
KXMCTV Minot That's what has happened to employees at State Bank in Fargo. Inspired by Oprah's 'Pay It Forward' initiative the company handed out a 1-thousand dollar bonus to each full time employee and a 5-hundred dollar bonus to each part-time employee. The company hired an Oprah impersonator to help make the announcement. The catch? They have to give all of the money away to people in need. Each employee is given a video camera to document his or her good deed... (MICHAEL SOLBERG\STATE BANK & TRUST CEO) "SOME PEOPLE HAVE HUGE DREAMS AND IDEAS AND WE EVEN HAVE SOME PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED REQUETS AND ARE ALREADY PAYING THE MONEY OUT. WE HAD ONE EMPLOYEE IDETINIFY A NEED. SOMEONE HAD HUGE MEDICAL BILLS AND THEY SAID I KNOW THAT'S WHERE I WANNA GO WITH MY MONEY, SO WE'RE ALREADY. WE'RE SEEING IT, AND IT'S AWESOME." By the way the employees DO get to keep the video cameras.

It might sound good in theory, but this is a truly sad move for the bank. I feel so sorry for all your employees. Especially the lower paid ones who could have probably used a little extra themselves.
Sorry too, I think it's an insult to want to hand someone money, but wait, let's be sure we document you getting it for the record. How nice to all those in need.
I also really hope the employees don't have to pay tax on the money they did NOT receive.
I guess it's easy for someone in Oprah's tax bracket, and probably the higher ups at the bank who came up with this ridiculous idea to be extra charitable, but your little tellers would probably have loved a bit of extra money. You know, money to help pay those high heating and gas bills (which you probably didn't give a raise to account for).
Go pat yourself on the back now. You robbed Peter to pay Paul. Does it feel good?
