Associated Press By JOE KAFKA Associated Press Writer PIERRE, S.D. (AP) A state law to be enacted July 1 will make ominous or annoying text messages illegal in South Dakota. The statute will revise an existing law on threats and harassment to include not only traditional telephones but also cell and satellite phones, and computers hooked to the Internet by cable TV. The law will make it a crime to use electronic devices to: Terrorize, intimidate, threaten, harass or annoy with lewd language. Threaten physical injury or property damage. Attempt to extort money or valuables. Disturb repeatedly by anonymously contacting people. Violations could bring up to one year in jail and $2,000 fines. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
