Oglala Sioux Tribe to vote on changing its constitution...Mar 25 2008 12:29PM
Associated Press RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) Monday is the deadline for Oglala Sioux tribal members to register to vote in an April 22nd election on a series of amendments to the tribal constitution. Included are changes that would create a court system separate from the tribal council, adopt four-year staggered terms for tribal council representatives, make the council adopt a code of ethics, clarify the recall process for elected officials, establish a bill of rights, and let people born off the reservation become enrolled tribal members. Officials plan to go door-to-door this week to try to register more voters. At least 30 percent of registered voters must vote in the election for it to be valid.
