RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) Some American Indians say their buying power is shrinking as food prices climb and that food stamps aren't stretching nearly as far as they used to.

Indian food stamp recipients told state Social Services Secretary Deb Bowman at a meeting in Rapid City this past week that it's children and the elderly who are suffering from it.

Indians at the meeting told Bowman that food stamps are not keeping up with the cost of living.

Bowman says decisions to raise food stamp allocations are made in Washington, not Pierre. And she says federal guidelines require cuts in food stamps when household income goes up.

Posted by Don Birkholz on Mar 31 2008 9:13PM - In reference to the article on food stamps not meeting the needs of recipients, there was a food stamp survey done in Billings, MT (at my request thru the Montana DPHHS) which showed that 12 of the 96 food stamp applicants said auto insurance was a reason for needing food stamps (that would equal over 30,000 over the last 20 years in Montana.

A study done by Dr Maril showed that 44% of the respondents said they could not buy food or pay rent due to mandatory auto insurance.

Included in the following website is a food stamp skyrocket linking South Dakota's mandatory auto insurance law to a food stamp skyrocket.
