Forest Service buys flying drones to help find marijuana growers...

Forest Service buys flying drones to help find marijuana growers Eds: APNewsNow. Will be led.

By MATTHEW BROWN Associated Press Writer BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) The U.S. Forest Service has purchased a pair of flying drones to track down marijuana cultivators operating in remote California woodlands.

Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey, who oversees the Forest Service, tells The Associated Press the pilotless aircraft will allow agency law enforcement officers to pinpoint marijuana fields and size up potential dangers before agents make arrests.

Rey says there is an increasing number of marijuana growers financed by Mexican drug cartels who are using California's national forests to stage their operations.

The SkySeer drones cost $100,000 each and weigh only four pounds. They were delivered to the Forest Service's aviation branch in Montana before being shipped to California.

One of the drones is equipped with a thermal camera for nighttime flights.

i could think of 200000 other possible ways to UTILIZE taxpayer money

oh well what is a fella to do?

Posted by Mike on Apr 4 2008 3:31PM - You've got to be kidding me. Legalize the stuff (alcohol is far worse), stop spending ridiculous amounts of money on this crud, locking people up in jail for it, and TAX it. Unbelievably dumb.

Don't want the mexican cartels? legalize it
Don't want your street corner turned into a drug dealership? legalize it
Don't want your tax dollars used to lock up people that like to use it? legalize it

It's not chemically addictive (like nicotine, cocaine), it's far less damaging socially (rather be a security agent at a Jack Daniels fest or a WeedFest? hmmm).

The list is long, end prohibition. Period.

Posted by Angry Citizen on Apr 4 2008 3:35PM - With all the economic problems this country currently faces, this is a terrible waste of tax payer monies!

Posted by asscore on Apr 4 2008 3:41PM - good to see where our tax dollars are being wasted.

Posted by Joe Public on Apr 4 2008 3:56PM - I hate to state the obvious, but I think I could find 4,678,512 other, better things to spend taxpayer money on.

Crumbling infrasctructure?
Downward-spiraling public schools?
Research/manufacturing related to sustainable energy sources?

No, screw those. We don't need them. Lets spend money on finding and killing plants. That's a BRILLIANT idea.

Posted by wow on Apr 4 2008 3:58PM - only $100,000 each...

when is the government going to realize that the war on marijuana is never going to end.

Posted by Kevin on Apr 4 2008 4:58PM - Can we say... "Pull!"

Posted by djhdjh on Apr 4 2008 5:45PM - what a complete waste of money.........how soon till one of the $100,000 flying drones gets shot down...... their efforts are futile

Posted by Logan on Apr 4 2008 5:50PM - What a waste of money.

It's amusing because I volunteer in the Angeles National Forest and various genetic strains of the plant grow wild in the mountains. I come across it hiking and working in the mountains and know enough that it's harmless. The issue is the growers are dangerous, but there's enough wild plant growing up there that every time I hear of an eradication project, I have to laugh a bit. It's a weed.

Posted by f_16falcon on Apr 5 2008 12:17PM - I've *NEVER* known a person on meth that hadn't tried/used marijuana before using meth. Never.

Posted by B-52 Bomber on Apr 5 2008 3:46PM - f-16, looks like your hanging with the wrong crowd. I really hope you are not this country's last line of defense! Smoke em if you got em!

Posted by AC-130 GUN SHIP on Apr 6 2008 6:36AM - F-16 should never compare the two or should never have come two this site to judge anything or anybodys coments I could smoke a lb of the stuff and l would never pull scabs from my face l truely belive they should legelize & tax it l'm 49 yrs old and my teenage yrs were in the 70's during the Panama red, Acapocho gold, and tie stick the best stuff in those days & I've never ever felt low or desprite enough to think of doing METH or HEROIN or that other stupid drug OXY CONTIN its not the drugs that do the damage its peoples emotions in dealing with stress of every day life that drives them to abusive behavour then & only then do drugs take their toll the human body I should include ALCOHOL too having a problem myself with it in the 80's after being pulled over by Police for D.W.I. I finally gave it up in 1982 lost my beer bellie & I look better & feel better too. and I've never woken up with a hangover from smoken a joint,SO F-16 the only thing that might compare to METH, is HUFFING inhaling paint from spray can to paint your lungs is like METH is to scabbing your face you see the comparing now F-16? SO please get your facts right & just because someone may have started with weed doesn't mean it drove them to it (METH) & the only thing that ALCOHOL has is that its legal do you think if it weren't your Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Uncle, Aunt, Cousin, Friends, wouldn't do it ? Wake up they would be at the speakeasys along with everyone else drinking away the stress of the day. you see the comparacing I'm putting forth to you? It's the system of Life that should be changed but that aint happening because theres to much money to be made, to much red tape & far to many Politicians involved. JOHN LENNON said it better: Imagine the world living as one, Imagine all love people, And until that happens we will always have a drug problem we had it then & we have it now, for better or worst mankind will always fine a way to bring a paridise feeling to his inner body & soul whether you like it or not it's out there for the taken, So why not legalize it. Some other Comparacing & Differances I'd like to say before I go twist me one 1: why is it you can't drink & drive But you need a drivers License to buy Alcohol, 2:I truely belive a person can drive better with an open container than a Cell phone 3:Marijuna has medical bennifits for cancer and glawrcoma patiants yet it's illegal, 4:ALCOHOL can give you Sorrosis of the liver, keep you out of work, drive recklessly, bad breath, poor judgement, yet it's legal. and to anyone who's called in on Monday knows excectly what I mean. ok I better do this thing because I will be getting up for my job later just like I have for the past 30 yrs and it's the place I agree with the B-52 BOMBER SMOKE'EM IF YA GOT'EM LEGALIZE IT NOW!

Posted by fossil on Apr 6 2008 11:19AM - I like the idea, get the crap off the streets!!!!! Pot is just as bad as alcohol.Only idiots think different!!!

Posted by Simian Ape on Apr 9 2008 9:30AM - We need to find those marijuana dealers and get them off of the streets. Duke Cunningham's son is one of them. John Ashcroft's nephew is another. If you want to have the death penalty for drug kingpins, begin with those two individuals.

Posted by kruzzercat on Apr 9 2008 12:15PM - The mighty Budwieser,.....Coors.....jack danials,....and all the others that manufacter alcohol with make sure that mary-jane will never become legal. If mary-jane was legal it would wreck the mighty booze kings empire,...and they have billions to fight poor mary-jane. I started smokin-the weed in 1976 and have ever since. In that time ive watched at least 10 of my close friends self-destruct on alcohol,......not a pretty sight. AMERICA GET WITH IT.....CAN WE SAY LEGALIZE IT! A smoker who will never stop,....not for jail,....prison,.....or torture. NEVER.

Posted by Lennon on Apr 9 2008 5:35PM - Yea. Let's start living according to John Lennon. Communism is a great plan. No god or country. Atheism. Good plans. Its an amazing plan. John Lennon was a communist. Spoke against things that made him rich. Capitalized on capitalism while trying to destroy it.

Posted by fossil on Apr 9 2008 8:12PM - Because you can't!!!

Posted by flapps on Apr 12 2008 7:59AM - The governments legal drugs, i.e., alcohol and tobacco products kill approximately 500,000 Americans annually, marijuana has not killed anyone, you cannot OD from this plant. The Drug War is a disaster. I believe that if marijuana had been legalized 30-40 years ago its possible we would not have this problem now with meth that is the real killer.

Posted by rick on Apr 14 2008 5:54PM - I saw some drones flying over minot last night. the fbi got all your address and is watching you because you voiced support for mary jane.

Posted by sheilanagig on Apr 15 2008 8:13AM - Maybe they'll get everyone, rick, and then they'll have to figure out what to do with them all. We already have the world record for percentage of the population in prison, but there's no reason we shouldn't ensure that we keep that record. Hell, why not get 50% of the population in prison? The best part? Now that percentage of the population is disqualified from voting! Fantastic plan! Damn brownshirts.

Posted by devildog on Apr 15 2008 12:22PM - Well well well it so nice to finally understand why we are the laziest country and a melti pot for losers because everybody thinks it okay to do drugs and pot has never killed someone seriously who was the dumb azz who said that.. Oh well for all you who think it should be legally keep doing it because you and I both know it is a gate way drug and maybe just maybe you will kill yourself someday and then they wont need to spend money to catch you anymore.

Posted by Nate on Apr 15 2008 12:50PM - Quote: "when is the government going to realize that the war on marijuana is never going to end."

They don't WANT it to end!! It's the same as any other crime with a fine. If they really wanted speeding to (almost) end, they'd simply kill anyone caught speeding, like Singapore with drug dealers. Now, Singapore still has drugs, but it costs a million times more than the USA, so only government people can get drugs now, so there's an incentive to continue the slaughter of the accused dealers.

Posted by flapps on Apr 16 2008 7:49AM - who was the dumb azz who said that........I am one of those dumb azz's that said that after doing a lot of research into the subject of this herb cannabis. Anyone with half a brain knows that "drugs" are here and will never be totally stamped out only a dumb azz couldn't see that. Smoking weed is a gateway drug, it might lead to cigarette smoking, the real killer. Melting pot of losers? Sounds to me only a loser would make a comment like that, are you calling our young men and women in Iraq that are fighting for your dumb azz losers?

Posted by sheilanagig on Apr 16 2008 8:11AM - I've always had a tendency to look at who's profiting from something being illegal. In this case, it's the dealers. They don't want it to become legal because then they'll have to get jobs and work for a living, and they won't make any money doing that. Prohibition helps to keep them in the fashion to which they have become accustomed. All you have to do is go to a police auction to see what kind of things they're able to buy on the proceeds of their business.

Follow the money. It's no different from when alcohol was illegal. Criminalize it and only criminals will profit.

Posted by devildog on Apr 16 2008 8:20AM - "flapps" you should probably just shut you flapps so you say weed doesnt kill well keep saying that because the more you say it the dumber you sound and if the men fighting for our country are smoking weed over there then that is one of the worst things they could be doing but if I had to guess you are in the Air Force and then that would explain everything you know the whole oh that is not really a real nuke is it oh well. Just because I know you are going to come back and something about the Millitary and me so for your info I was a Marine for 8 years I've been to Iraq the first time and we did not smoke weed because we were not losers like yourself.

Posted by flapps on Apr 16 2008 4:19PM - Hey Jarhead....listen up...here is what you wrote [we are the laziest country and a melti pot for losers ] YOU CALLED OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN IRAQ LOSERS!!! You are partially right about the Air Force though, I put in twenty years and retired 30 years ago!

Posted by expositor on Apr 16 2008 7:10PM - I don't think there's any point to persue a "alcohol vs. marijuana" debate. From what I've seen in my short time here on earth, those who smoke ganja frequently enjoy alcoholic beverages as a complement to the mj buzz. When the combination is correctly balanced, the subject usually desires an active jukebox and begins to fantasize about a steak dinner that they can already smell. I rarely meet anyone who exclusively prefers pot smoking, but shuns alcohol. Therefore, as a generalization, most pot smokers are also drinkers. But only about 20 percent of drinkers are pot smokers too. Likewise, I imagine most meth users, if not all, are pot smokers, too, but I'll guess that less than 20 percent of pot smokers are also meth users. These are the ratios that I have observed.
