Thousands of additional cyclone victims...War deadline proposal...May 5 2008 11:07PM
Associated Press YANGON, Myanmar (AP) There are fears the death toll will continue to rise in Myanmar, with the discovery of a large group of victims in one town where a powerful cyclone tore through. State media reports 10,000 people were found dead in that one community. Officials had estimated previously estimated 10,000 had died in the storm. White House AP) First lady Laura Bush says the U.S. Embassy in Myanmar is giving $250,000 to humanitarian groups helping with cyclone recovery efforts. And she says more is available, but only if American disaster response experts are allowed to enter the country to assess the situation. So far, permission has been denied. CAPITOL HILL (AP) House Democrats want to send another message to President Bush about the war in Iraq. A funding bill that includes a troop withdrawal deadline of December 2009 is set for a vote. Lawmakers are also tacking on college aid for veterans and an unemployment benefit extension. The measure is expected to be rejected by the Senate. DURHAM, N.C. (AP) It's the eve of the primaries in two key states, and both Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham CLinton spent a hectic day pressing for votes. They're keeping up the heated debate over lowering Gas Prices. In both North Carolina and Indiana, the Obama campaign has outspent Clinton's. WHITE HOUSE (AP) The White House has taken on a Mexican flair. President Bush hosted a dinner celebration of Cinco de Mayo. He calls the holiday a chance to prove the connection between the U.S. and Mexico. The immigration debate has caused a strain in that connection, and some Republicans wonder if that will impact the Hispanic vote in November. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
