Ethics dayNov 19 2008 7:02PM
KXMBTV Bismarck (Nicole Morrison-Mathern/Emcee) "From a student cheating on a test..." There aren't always clear answers on what's right to do, but more than 300 students from different high schools in the region are discussing how to handle different ethical dilemmas. (Morrison-Mathern) "To computer ethics, what can you do at work, what can't you do." Texting and checking personal email on the job, is just one moral issue business leaders and volunteers are discussing with students Volunteers say, it's a good question for students as they enter the workplace, as well as for adults (Wes Engbrecht/Emcee) "We all make mistakes, we have to learn how to deal with them and so we're just trying to steer them in the direction to take a look at what your actions are, are they ethical, can you live with yourself for what you're doing?" Students here say they are already faced with many questionable situations every day in school (Allie White/Junior) "You see people cheating all the time and you don't know whether you stand up and say what's right or you blow it off." But, as many volunteers here say, inner problems only get more complicated as young people transition into the workplace (Nats) "Is it really that big of a deal? "Should you be allowed to look at what she's looking at?" Good discussions for students to have now, and a practice that will help them prepare for all kinds of situations in the future (White) "At first we had simple answers, but then we realized it affected a lot more people, so you have to come up with more broad ranges of answers, more than black and white." (Mathern) "There's that gray area so they can help make that good decision, and choices in their life." Amber Schatz, KX News. Chamber of commerce members and volunteers say they come up with different ethical questions every year for "Ethics Day"... The personal computer use and texting on the job dilemma is one they found to be most timely.
