Phils on brink of World Series title...Johnson closing in on third straight driving title

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Phillies are on the brink of their second World Series title in franchise history after routing Tampa Bay 10-2 to take a 3-1 series lead. Ryan Howard homered twice and drove in five runs, Jayson Werth homered, Joe Blanton was the winning pitcher and became the first pitcher since Ken Holtzman in 1974 to hit a home run in a World Series

LONDON (AP) Drew Brees completed 30-of-41 passes for 339 yards and three TDs in leading the New Orleans Saints past San Diego 37-32 in the NFL's second regular-season game played in London.

After last year's rain-soaked New York Giants' 13-10 win over Miami, the NFL was hoping for a high-scoring offensive show and the Saints and Chargers complied with New Orleans evening its mark at 4-and-4.

PITTSBURGH (AP) In a matchup of division leaders, the New York Giants used four interceptions and rallied past Pittsburgh 21-14 at Heinz Field. Eli Manning tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Kevin Boss with 3:11 left to help the Giants retain their one-game lead over Washington in the NFC East.

NEW YORK (AP) Penn State surged in the Bowl Championship Series standings after its big win at Ohio State, closing the gap on first-place Texas and second-place Alabama on Sunday. Still, the Nittany Lions are in danger of being unbeaten and left out of the BCS national championship game.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) Carl Edwards won the Nascar race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but second-place finisher Jimmie Johnson was the big winner. The two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion widened his lead in the Chase for the championship and now leads Edwards by a commanding 183 points with three races left.
