KXMBTV Bismarck Tonight Ag. Reporter Sarah Gustin visits with one seed farm about which varities producers are expressing interest in. Yards full of snow aren't stopping producers from making spring planting plans. (Richard Tweeten / Tweeten Seed Farm) "They are looking at some other new varities, Howard, Faller. Farmers are always looking for something a little better. They are looking at a few more bushels. Maybe a little more protein." Tweeten Seed Farm has been selling seed for 40 years growing strictly foundation NDSU seedstock releases. This year the Tweeten's have 5 varities sitting in these bins waiting to be planted. It may only be January but producers are already wanting opinions and answers to what is the variety to plant this year. (Rick Tweeten / Tweeten Seed Farm) "People that are calling, they are still interested in Glenn. It has been the number one wheat in the state for the past two years." Tweeten says producers are asking for varities with some resistance to scab, heartiness, and that come with some protein. (Richard Tweeten / Tweeten Seed Farm) "Protein happens to be worth some money this year. If you have 16 protein over 14 protein it is worth probably about a dollar and 25 cents a bushel. It is something to look at again. We had a about three, four years in a row where protein was only worth 15 cents a percentage point." This year they are selling 30 to 50 thousand bushels of wheat seed He says Glenn was their number one seller last year and he plans for Glenn to take the number one postition again this year. (Rick Tweeten / Tweeten Seed Farm) "We plant more Glenn on our acres on our own farm and for our seed sales, we plant more Glenn than any other varities. Last year Glenn for our seed production was followed by Howard, was our second best seller and I guess that was our number two wheat on our commercial acres also." Tweeten say about 70 percent of their seed sells between February 1st and March 15th. Tweeten says Howard was their number two seller last year. Other popular varities at their farm include Steele North Dakota, Faller and Alsen.
