Associated Press FLOODING-ROUNDS Governor tours high water area in Aberdeen SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) Gov. Mike Rounds, who toured areas of high water at Aberdeen on Thursday, says a lot of water has to move out of a very flat area and that Aberdeen could have "some real significant possibilities of flooding." He says 50 prison inmates are filling sandbags and stacking them in lower areas along Moccasin Creek. Also, the National Guard has been activated and has moved a variety of heavy equipment to Aberdeen. The governor says the next five to six days will make a difference in how the Moccasin Creek crest comes through. Rounds says officials are hoping for the best but planning for the worst. He says the James River actually is flowing north where the Elm River empties into it. FLOODING-OPERATIONS CENTER Emergency Operations Center opens PIERRE, S.D. (AP) Gov. Mike Rounds says the state's Emergency Operations Center in Pierre has opened to deal with flooding issues. A Department of Public Safety spokeswoman says the center was activated at the request of counties that are requesting assistance, most notably Brown County. The Public Safety department says other counties eventually could need help as floodwaters move south. State agencies with representatives in the Emergency Operations Center include Emergency Management, the National Guard, Corrections and Game, Fish and Parks. Rounds says prison inmates were working on Thursday, filling and stacking sandbags in the Aberdeen area. AP-MIDWEST FLOODING New crest at Fargo up to 43 feet FARGO, N.D. (AP) The National Weather Service has raises its Red River crest forecast at Fargo to as much as 43 feet. The weather service had been predicting a crest of 41 feet by Saturday afternoon. The new guiDance issued Thursday is between 41 and 42 feet, but the weather service says it could go as high as 43 feet. Fargo, North Dakota's largest city, has been rushing to raise its dike protection to 43 feet. FLOODING-Missouri River BLAST No 3rd round of ice jam explosives planned Bismarck, N.D. (AP) North Dakota's homeland security director says water is moving on the Missouri River. Greg Wilz says it doesn't appear that another round of explosives is needed to break up a river ice jam. The ice has been causing flooding in southwestern Bismarck this week. State officials and a private blasting company have been drilling holes in the river ice and using plastic explosives to create a channel on the river's east side. Some river ice is 3 feet thick. Two rounds of explosives were used Wednesday. North Dakota National Guard commander David Sprynczynatyk (SPRIN'-suh-NAH'-tik) says more than 450 pounds of plastic explosives were used in the operation. In addition,Wilz says more than 32 tons of road salt have been dumped on the river ice to help break it up. AIM SLAYING Defense: alleged AIM slaying gun was with police FARGO, N.D. (AP) A defense lawyer for one of two men charged with the 1975 slaying of an American Indian Movement member has accused prosecutors of putting "erroneous and untrue" accusations in a court filing. John Graham and Richard Marshall are scheduled to stand trial May 12 in Rapid City on charges they committed or aided and abetted the murder of Annie Mae Aquash (AH'-kwash). Prosecutors say the handgun used to kill Aquash could have been the same revolver taken from Marshall in March 1975 when he was arrested for a different murder. But Marshall's lawyer says that's impossible because the gun was offered as evidence in the April 1976 trial of that case and was in police custody when Aquash was killed in December 1975. STIMULUS-ENERGY SD gets stimulus money for energy projects SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) The Obama administration says state government, American Indian tribes and selected counties and cities in South Dakota are getting $13.1 million in economic stimulus money for energy efficiency and conservation projects. The biggest chunk, almost $9.6 million, goes to the state energy office. Among cities getting funds, Sioux Falls receives $1.5 million and Rapid City $649,000. Among tribes receiving money, the Oglala Sioux Tribe gets $827,000 and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe $353,500. The new allocation is separate from $48.2 million for South Dakota weatherization and energy funding that was announced earlier this month. CRIME SPREE-SENTENCE Defendant in fall 2007 crime spree gets 41 years BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) A man captured in Nebraska after a three-state string of armed robberies was sentenced Thursday to 41 years in federal prison. Camille Adams of Anaconda, Mont., earlier pleaded guilty to robbery and two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence. The 22-year-old Adams was sentenced Thursday by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull in Billings. Along with a prison term of 499 months, Adams was ordered to pay $3,963 in restitution. The charges stem from armed robberies at convenience stores in Montana in the fall of 2007. Federal prosecutors said Adams and two others also robbed a convenience store in Sheridan, Wyo., and the State Line Casino near the Nebraska-South Dakota border. They were captured after a 14-hour manhunt in Chadron, Neb. CUSTER ALTERCATION Woman arrested in Custer for attempted murder PIERRE, S.D. (AP) State officials say a Denver woman has been arrested on three counts of attempted murder after she fired a gun in the direction of three law officers who were checking on her at a motel near Custer. Attorney General Larry Long's office says KaChina McAlexander, 31, was arrested Tuesday. Two Custer County deputies and a Highway Patrol officer had gone to the motel to check on McAlexander. The attorney general's office said the officers found the woman with a gun in her hand, and she fired the gun several times in the direction of the officers. The officers were not hurt.
