Weather Extra - AdvectionApr 8 2009 10:59PM
KXMBTV Bismarck This question comes to us via e-mail. Mike of Glen Ullin asks "at what temp does a wind become a warming wind or conversely a cooling wind?" A great question, although there really is no set temperature that makes a wind a warming or cooling wind What makes a wind either warming or cooling is where it comes from The transport of this warmer or cooler air is called advection For example imagine there is a warm air factory in Mandan And 18 wheelers have to bring the air to Bismarck So the tractor trailers are advecting warm air into Bismarck As long as the air in Mandan is warmer than Bismarck we can say that there is warm air advection And this can happen if the air is below or above freezing...just as long as the air temperature is warmer in one area and moving to another causing the temperature to rise in a new place And for a cooling wind, all you need is colder air from one place moving to another area cooling the temperature.. As is what occured during the day on Wednesday Winds shifted from the West the the East...with the East winds bringing cooler air into central North Dakota With your weather extra, I'm Ryan Davidson, KX News.
