Band NightMay 8 2009 11:00PM
KXMBTV Bismarck Our Amber Schatz shows us how the young musicians prepared to rock it out... for Band Night. (NAT 13:07 "Line up!") They have only one day to practice together.. And as you can imagine... Mixing more than 240 7th through 12 graders together in one giant marching band... can be a little chaotic (NAT 14:08 Ready? Blows whistle) The Southwest Marching Band consists of Richardton, Trinity, Scranton, Hettinger, Bowman New England, Belfield and South Heart A bunch of small towns that normally don't have this many musicians... (3:17 Jana Schweigert/South Heart Music Teacher) "Being able to hear that much sound is very different from what we're used to." (Catie Hoselton/Belfield Music Teacher) 2:30 "It gives them the chance to be the largest band in the tri-state area, otherwise they're 3 kids, one trumpet, one trombone and now this band we have 55 percussionists." (NAT DRUMS) These drummers have watched the Southwest Marching Band more than triple the past five years... And say it gives them big opportunities (Chandler Synnes/South Heart) 6:06 "Our band is really huge and just competing with Minot, that has an amazing drumline, it's going to be awesome." (James Duletski/ Belfield) 8:04 "It's something you can't get everyday in a small town." (Schweigert) 4:24 "When I was in high school it would have been an awesome thing, yah you complain about being tired from marching, you complain about the cold, but it's so cool and down the road they are going to say I was part of something cool." The mega-band joins 23 other bands from the tri-state area and Canada.. And when it comes down to it... They're having fun... and hitting all the right notes (8:46) "I just love drumming, it's amazing and then getting the opportunity to be in something like this, I'll just look back at it." (4:42) "This is not about being on the right foot, it's not about making the corner, it's about being with a large group and enjoying being part of the band." Showing that the Southwest can represent.. Amber Schatz, KX News. So how did they choose their colors for the Southwest Marching band? They didn't want to play favorites... So they went with brown and green.
