Charges dropped against truckerJun 13 2009 9:27AM
Associated Press PEMBINA, N.D. (AP) Prosecutors have dropped a charge of possessing a controlled substance that had been filed against a Canadian truck driver arrested at the Pembina border crossing in North Dakota with drugs in February. Pembina County State's Attorney Stuart Askew says he dropped the charge in part because Paramveer Singh Hunjan bought the drugs legally in Canada. They included codeine and morphine. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency says Hunjan is a member of a "trusted traveler" program for commercial truckers. Drivers who are part of the program are given a higher level of trust and typically are processed more quickly when crossing the U.S.-Canada border. Prosecutors can refile the charge against Hunjan if he gets into trouble again in the next year. Information from: KXPO-AM (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
