Associated Press FORCED CHEMO Teen says he's mad judge is ordering more chemotherapy NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) A 13-year-old boy with cancer who fled Minnesota last month to avoid chemotherapy says he's not happy to hear that a judge has ruled he must continue getting the treatment. After a court hearing yesterday, Daniel Hauser told The Associated Press he was mad to hear that he still has to get chemotherapy. He wasn't in court, but he was interviewed by The AP later at his family's farm at Sleepy Eye. He says he gets sick from the chemo, and it makes him dizzy and causes an immediate headache. He says he feels his tumor's improvement comes from alternative treatments he's doing such as supplemental drinks and pills. But Brown County Judge John Rodenberg says it seems to be the chemo that has helped the boy's tumor shrink significantly after a recent round of the treatment. The family says they'll take Daniel in for treatment as scheduled today. ST PAUL SHOOTING Teen charged in fatal shooting in St. Paul ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A Vadnais Heights teen faces charges in what authorities say was a gang-related fatal shooting last week. The Ramsey County Attorney's Office charged 18-year-old Marquez Daiveon Storey yesterday with second-degree murder and committing a crime for the benefit of a gang. He's being sought on an arrest warrant. The criminal complaint says the victim, 18-year-old Dionte Ramone Montantes of St. Paul, was shot in the head last Friday afternoon just after leaving a recreation center. The complaint says Storey and fellow gang members went driving near the center, where Storey and another person got out of the vehicle and approached Montantes. Witnesses say Storey shot him. PHONE LAWYER-APPEAL Judge turns down appeal in phony lawyer case Bismarck, N.D. (AP) A federal judge has rejected the appeal of a Minnesota man convicted of impersonating a lawyer. Howard Kieffer of Duluth had asked U.S. District Judge Patrick Conmy in Bismarck, North Dakota, to throw out his conviction or order a new trial. Jurors in Bismarck found Kieffer guilty of mail fraud and false statements. Kieffer's sentencing is set for July 30th. He faces up to 25 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Kieffer's appeal says the evidence did not support the verdict. He accused prosecutors of making improper remarks during closing arguments and said court officials were slow to respond to his request for documents. Conmy rejected those claims, and wrote in his order, "This was not a close case." HIAWATHA METRO-CLOSURE Part of Hiawatha light-rail to shut down for weekend MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Construction work will shut down part of the Hiawatha light-rail line in Minneapolis from 11 p.m. Friday to 3:30 a.m. Monday, but buses will be used to fill in the service. The line operated by Metro Transit runs between downtown Minneapolis and the Mall of America in Bloomington. Last year it topped 10 million rides for the first time. Metro Transit officials say the construction work involves lengthening rail platforms at stations to accommodate three-car trains, as well as doing some upgrades of intersection signals. While the line is shut down, buses will substitute for trains between the 46th Street Station and the Mall of America Station. Trains will operate normally on the rest of the 12-mile line. OTTER TAIL RATES SD PUC approves Otter Tail electric rate increase PIERRE, S.D. (AP) The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission has approved a settlement that allows Otter Tail Power Company to increase rates for its electricity customers in the state. The agreement provides an overall rate increase of just under 12 percent, but increases will vary according to different kinds of customers. The new rates will boost Otter Tail's annual revenue by about $3 million in South Dakota. The average residential customer's monthly bill will increase by $6.72. Otter Tail, based in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, has about 11,700 customers in South Dakota. It also has customers in Minnesota and North Dakota. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
