MILITARY FAMILY Military service runs in family Dickinson, N.D. (AP) Pat Lothspeich says he's proud that his father, his sons and brothers served in the military, even though it wasn't all planned.

Lothspeich says his sons' service was somewhat of a coincidence, "just the way things turn out in life." Eighty-four-year-old Ed Lothspeich of Dickinson and his eight brothers Eugene, Harold, Donald, Gerald, Lyle, Franklin, Leon and Marlin served in the military. The family originally settled in the northeastern North Dakota town of Wales.

Pat Lothspeich is Ed's son. His 27-year-old son, Josh, is deployed in Afghanistan. Josh's brothers, Jason and Eric, have served in Iraq.

Ed says he's proud of his grandsons. Jason says he and his brothers consider military service "a great thing to do as an American."' The National Guard has presented the Lothspeich family with a special medal of merit.

(AP) Four people were killed after a van left a highway northeast of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, east of Fargo, and struck a raised section of the ditch, then rolled over.

The Becker County Sheriff's Office says the accident occurred just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The van had seven occupants in all, four of whom were ejected when the van struck the field approach.

Authorities say the four victims were dead at the scene.

The four victims are from the Pinepoint-Ponsford area and are identified as a 28-year-old male, a 35-year-old male, a 24-year-old female and a 22-year-old female. Their names have not been released.

The remaining three occupants are being treated for serious injuries at hospitals in Detroit Lakes and Fargo.

BUG BOMBING Ohio Air Force unit spraying for bugs across ND Bismarck, N.D. (AP) The entomologist for an Ohio Air Force Reserve unit that sprays for mosquitoes in North Dakota says the state is probably a "lifetime customer." The unit based at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, Ohio has been spraying in areas around Minot and Grand Forks since 2001.

This year, Williston was added.

Entomologist Mark Breidenbaugh (BRY'-den-bough) says Williston's mosquito problem is as bad as he's seen. The northwestern North Dakota city is near Little Muddy and Missouri Rivers that swell from Rocky Mountain snowmelt.

Williston mosquito board member Steve Kemp says swarms of the bugs chased people to their cars last summer, "like a scene from a sci-fi horror movie." Williston residents voted in November to pay more money for bug control to help bring the C-130 planes from Ohio this spring. Mayor Ward Koeser says the city may never get rid of the mosquitoes, but with the help of nature and the Air Force, he hopes they can be managed.

FUEL FROM WOOD Wyoming plant making ethanol from trees UPTON, Wyo. (AP) In the tiny town of Upton, Wyoming, KL Energy Corp's test plant is among those at the forefront of an effort to turn trees, waste wood and other plants into automobile fuel.

KL Energy Corporation of Rapid City, South Dakota, is hoping to capitalize on doubts about Corn ethanol and the federal government's embrace of biofuels as a way to create jobs, help replace imported oil and protect the environment.

Cole Gustafson is a biofuels economist at North Dakota State University in Fargo. He says projects like KL Energy's are "clearly the future of the industry." KL's process turns the wood into 200-proof liquid ethanol.

A company executive says it plans to build plants based on its Upton model near forests around the country.

The instant nonfat dry milk came from Plainview Milk Products Cooperative of Minnesota which is recalling products made over the past two years due to the possible contamination. Many of Plainview's products were sold to other food makers.

Minneapolis-based Malt-O-Meal is recalling "Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal" sold in cartons and variety packs with best-if-used-by dates of June 30, 2009 to Oct. 28, 2010.

The oatmeal is sold nationally under brands including Cub Foods, Diamond Crystal, Fastco, Flavorite, Foodland, Good 'n Hearty, Hearty Traditions, Hy-Top, IGA, Mom's Best Natural, Megaroons, Millville, Our Family, Richfood, Shop 'n Save and Smart Menu.

FLOODED PARKS Fargo hoping to repair parks, Golf courses FARGO, N.D. (AP) Fargo-area parks and golf courses have taken a hit from Red River flooding, and officials are working on reseeding and repairing them.

The Park District's finance director, Jim Larson, estimates about $450,000 in lost revenue, on top of $600,000 spent on contractors, supplies and labor. He says the federal government will cover some of those costs but he does not yet know how much.

The Fourth of July weekend usually is the busiest camping weekend of the year at Lindenwood Park. But flooding has taken the lower 26 camper stalls along the river out of service. It leaves 21 spots in the upper campground.

Some areas will reopen later this summer.

Moorhead's parks system estimates more than $100,000 in damage and repairs from spring flooding. Operations Director Chad Martin said one shelter was underwater.

Information from: The Forum, http://www.in-forum.com RISING LAKE Lake Sakakawea 20 feet above 2008 Riverdale, N.D. (AP) Lake Sakakawea is about 20 feet higher than last year at this time with more water flowing into the Missouri River reservoir system.

The lake formed by the Garrison Dam has rebounded years of drought. It's now at around 1,839 feet.

The big lake is expected to reach 1,840 around July 10 the first time it has reached that level since 1999.

The Army Corps of Engineers says heavy winter snow in Montana has meant higher inflows into the river system.
