Iraq's second largest city under curfew after shrine attack...Jun 15 2007 9:42AM
Associated Press BAGHDAD (AP) Iraq's prime minister has imposed a curfew in Iraq's second-largest city after bombers leveled a Sunni shrine just outside of Basra. Police say gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenades attacked the shrine last night. They returned again this morning, planting the bombs inside the structure that destroyed it. A top Basra security official says the bombers were disguised as cameramen who asked guards for permission to Film inside the shrine. Minutes after they left, a huge explosion rocked the building, destroying the dome and minaret. No injuries were reported. In Baghdad, a curfew remains in place two days after suspected al-Qaida bombers blew the minarets off a sacred Shiite shrine north of Baghdad. % |
