Man gets 30 days for beheading parakeet

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) An Eagan man is spending 30 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to tearing the head off his girlfriend's pet parakeet.

Nathan David Andersen pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty and also had to pay 177 dollars in fines. He'll serve two years probation and submit to a chemical dependency evaluation.

Court documents say the 25-year-old Andersen attacked the bird in November in a jealous rage after suspecting his girlfriend of an affair.

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom called the sentence a significant penalty.

Posted by tron on Oct 9 2007 1:26AM - This ia all wrong. I have been best friends with Nate for 15 years. He didn't "Behead" the bird. Without getting into too many details, the bird was caught in the middle of an unfortunate dispute. Nate is a lover of life who would never hurt a soul- not even one of our feathered friends. Don't believe the hype. This stupid situation has practically ruined the last year of his life. South Dakota doesn't know **** about this.
