Marker would recognize "divorce capital"

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A hundred years ago, Sioux Falls was known as the "divorce capital of the nation." South Dakota's residency requirements and grounds for divorce were less restrictive than elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century. As a result, Sioux Falls drew a lot of wealthy couples from other states seeking a quick and quiet divorce.

Bruce Blake with the Minnehaha County Historical Society says it even became a mini industry for the town because couples would have to rent or own a home in order to be considered a resident.

The Historical Society wants to put up a marker in Sioux Falls denoting its history as a divorce factory.
