State allowing import of dairy herdApr 29 2008 3:03PM
Associated Press Bismarck, N.D. (AP) A New York state dairy farmer is bringing his herd of 100 cows to Logan County. State Dairy Coalition director Gary Hoffman says Mike O'Handly bought an existing farm near Napoleon, and will start operations next month after upgrading equipment. O'Handly this week got permission from the North Dakota State Board of Animal Health to bring his herd into the state. He needed the OK because the cows were not vaccinated for brucellosis when they were calves. Deputy State Veterinarian Beth Carlson says O'Handly has to meet certain requirements. They include a brucellosis test before and after moving the animals to North Dakota, and a three-year quarantine. That means the cows can only be sold for slaughter during that time period.
