Chouteau County suggests new Missouri River damMay 18 2008 4:07PM
Associated Press GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) Chouteau County commissioners say it's time to take another look at building a new hydroelectric dam on the Missouri River. Commissioners have sent a letter to Sen. Jon Tester, asking him to investigate the feasibility of building a dam at Carter, 15 miles upstream from Fort Benton. Commissioners say the dam could provide affordable electricity, water for Agricultural producers and new boating and fishing opportunities. Dick and Mary Urquhart live south of Carter. They say the proposed dam would flood property they own, where one of the nation's most well-preserved Lewis and Clark campsites is located. The Urquharts also own the land east of Great Falls where the proposed coal-fired Highwood Generating Station would be located. The Chouteau County Commission has gone on record as opposing the coal-fired plant. Information from: Great Falls Tribune, http://www.greatfallstribune.com (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
