LONDON (AP) A British man who faked his death in a $500,000 insurance scam has been sentenced to more than six years in jail.

His wife got a slightly longer sentence for helping John Darwin stage his apparent drowning death in a canoe accident in 2002.

Prosecutors say the two kept the fact that Darwin was alive a secret from their adult sons, while the couple planned to start a new life together in Panama. One son testified that news of his father's disappearance "crushed" his world.

The plot began to unravel last year when John Darwin walked into a London police station claiming to have amnesia.
