Bank failure...Iraq war nears Vietnam costJul 26 2008 1:52AM
Associated Press Washington (AP) The Iraq war has become almost as expensive for the American taxpayers as the Vietnam conflict was. A congressional report estimates the cost of military operations in Iraq has come to 648 billion dollars. In today's dollars, Vietnam cost 686 billion. DENVER (AP) Republican presidential candidate John McCain says Democrat Barack Obama's call for troop withdrawals in Iraq could have plunged the Mideast into war. In a speech to Hispanic veterans in Denver, McCain ridiculed Obama's policies as "the audacity of hopelessness." PARIS (AP) Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama meets with leaders of Britain Saturday as he finishes an election-season trip overseas. Friday in France, Obama said Iran should yield to Western demands to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) There's nothing sinister about the Russian submarine being brought to the surface in the Providence River in Rhode Island. A military salvage team is raising the sub, which served as a floating museum until it sank in a storm last year. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
