World War II veteran gets Saipan medalSep 4 2008 4:13PM
Associated Press Eighty-four year-old Lawrence Meoska (mee-AH'-skah), formerly of Plankinton, was given a medal this week to honor his part in the battle that involved 71,000 Americans. Almost 3,000 of them were killed and more than 10,000 were injured. Meoska was among the first wave of troops in Saipan and in two other battles. Bobby Miller, Meoska's son-in-law and veterans service officer for Aurora and Brule counties, says Meoska has the credentials for such an honor and that it was long overdue.
