Hanna buffets Carolinas...More mortgage troubles

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) Tropical Storm Hanna is rattling the resort beaches of the Carolinas with wind and rain. Behind Hannah, a much more dangerous Hurricane Ike could be headed for Florida sometime next week.

BAGHDAD (AP) Six people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack targeting ex-deputy prime minister Ahmad Chalabi's (AHK'-mahd SHAH'-lah-beez) convoy in western Baghdad. His office says Chalabi, a former Pentagon favorite, was not injured in last night's attack.

Washington (AP) A possible government takeover of two mortgage giants to save them from failure could leave taxpayers on the hook for billions of dollars. A person briefed on the matter says Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could be headed toward conservatorship as soon as this weekend. They hold or guarantee half the nation's mortgage debt.

SEATTLE (AP) Aircraft assembly workers at Boeing are planning to hit the picket lines after talks during a 48-hour contract extension failed. The Machinists union bargains for around 27,000 workers and it's the second strike in as many negotiations.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) John McCain and sarah palin drew big crowds campaigning in Wisconsin and Michigan, both Democratic leaning states. Democrat Barack Obama did some fund-raising yesterday, with help from rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, who hosted the event.
