Americans uneasy...Germany makes economic move...Obama takes aim at McCain

UNDATED (AP) Americans are still uneasy about Washington's financial rescue plan. They're wondering how it will affect their lives. One store owner in Dallas tells The Associated Press people are "afraid to spend." She says, "They want to see what the bailout will do."


STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) Germany has become the latest country to move to allay fears about a financial meltdown. The government is adding 21 billion dollars to a 48-billion-dollar rescue plan for Germany's second-biggest commercial property lender and guaranteeing private bank accounts.

ASHEVILLE, N.C (AP) Barack Obama says John McCain is "gambling" that he can distract voters with "smears" rather than talk about substance. Obama says "it's what you do when you're out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time." Obama spoke today at a rally in Asheville, North Carolina.

WASHINGTON (AP) Joe Biden is canceling his campaign appearances tomorrow and Tuesday after the death of his mother-in-law. A Biden spokesman says Bonny Jean Jacobs, the mother of Biden's wife, Jill, died today after a long illness. Jacobs was 78 and lived in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.

WASHINGTON (AP) A Catholic Church leader says the law is a guide to an orderly society. Cardinal John Patrick Foley spoke at a service in Washington today. Five Supreme Court justices attended the annual Red Mass ahead of the start of their new term tomorrow.
