The accident happened 60 miles north of Sacramento.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) Facing a lawsuit over deceptive mortgage practices, a Bank of America subsidiary will modify tens of thousands of home loans to help keep people in 11 states from being foreclosed on. Officials in Illinois and in California negotiated the deal for borrowers stuck with Countrywide mortgages.

Bank of America purchased Countrywide in June, at the same time Illinois and California sued the company.

SINGAPORE (AP) Asian markets don't seem inspired by the bailout plan just passed by Congress. Markets there are plunging amid fears the deepening financial turmoil in Europe could slow down global growth. The jump in unemployment here is also a concern.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) With John McCain's campaign bringing up Barack Obama's association with a radical from the 1960s, Obama is responding by bringing up the Keating Five scandal. Obama's campaign says McCain's involvement with convicted thrift owner Charles Keating "is a window into McCain's economic past, present and future."

CHICAGO (AP) A leading pediatrician's group says hedgehogs, hamsters, baby chicks, lizards and turtles don't make suitable pets for young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics says the animals carry diseases and germs that are bad for children who are still developing their immune systems.
