Schweitzer, Brown tangle over meat labeling, brucellosis in final...Oct 25 2008 10:37AM
Associated Press GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) The final debate between Governor Schweitzer and Republican challenger Roy Brown featured contentious moments, with both candidates criticizing each other on a range of issues. Right from the start, Schweitzer accused Brown of opposing meat labeling legislation that would make it possible for consumers to determine the origins of their food. Brown said the bill was unworkable, and offered as proof that grocery stores aren't implementing it. The very next issue, Brown went after Schweitzer saying Montana was brucellosis-free for 23 years, than lost that status during Schweitzer's term. Schweitzer said he has the right idea for dealing with the disease, by focusing management restrictions on ranches near Yellowstone National Park where the outbreaks occurred. He offered as proof a recent decision by federal regulators that he says endorses such an idea. Last night's debate in Great Falls was sponsored by the Montana Farmers Union and moderated by the Great Falls Tribune. By AP writer Matt Gouras (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
