Bar owners say higher costs eat into bottom line

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) While the amount of alcohol imported into the state and made in South Dakota keeps rising, retailers say it doesn't mean the industry is drowning in profits.

They say overall costs have risen and that changes in consumer habits could mean problems for businesses that sell alcohol.

Some say the problems could force some small-town bars to close.

More than 24 million gallons of spirits, wine and beer were reported in the state in fiscal 2008. Tax income rose slightly.

But bar owners point out that the wholesale price of beer jumped twice in 2008 and the price of all alcoholic beverages increased in September.

And one bar owner says if the Legislature adds a public smoking ban, the situation could kill businesses like his.
