Burris "humbled"...Bailout request...Biden visits Iraq, son

CHICAGO (AP) Roland Burris says he's "humbled and honored" to be Illinois' next junior senator. Senate Democrats had initially fought the appointment by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who faces federal corruption charges. Burris, the former Illinois attorney general, is expected to be sworn in this week.

Washington (AP) President George W. Bush is asking Congress for the final $350 billion in the financial bailout fund. Bush acted following a request by President-elect Barack Obama, who promises the money will be used to free credit for small businesses and consumers and reduce the rising number of foreclosures.

BAGHDAD (AP) It's a diplomatic and personal mission for Vice President-elect Joe Biden. He not only conferred with Iraqi leaders, but also met with his son Beau and other members of the Delaware National Guard serving in Iraq. Biden visited Pakistan and Afghanistan this weekend.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) An Army Black Hawk helicopter has crashed on the campus of Texas A&M University, killing one person and injuring four others aboard. It had been taking part in ROTC training exercises.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Health officials in Minnesota say they're certain about the source of Salmonella bacteria that has sickened nearly 400 people in 42 states. It's been conclusively linked to peanut butter. A genetic match has been established to a 5-pound package of King Nut peanut butter at a nursing facility in Minnesota.
