Church of Scotland votes to appoint gay ministerMay 24 2009 8:24AM
Associated Press The Church of Scotland has voted in favor of appointing an openly gay minister. The Rev. Scott Rennie had been married to a woman, but is now in a relationship with a man. He was first appointed as a minister 10 years ago, but has faced some criticism since he moved to a church in Scotland last year. Protesters say his appointment isn't consistent with the teachings of the Bible. Anglicans have been involved in a lengthy debate over the issue since the Episcopal Church consecrated Gene Robinson of New Hampshire as the first openly gay bishop in 2003. Rennie tells Britain's Sky News television that his opponents simply "don't want any change" to take place. He says the same arguments were made when women were ordained. % |
