MSU looks to trim spending by more than $1MJun 2 2009 4:47AM
Associated Press The state Board of Regents voted 4-3 Friday to raise tuition by 3 percent next year for in-state students at the flagship campuses of MSU and the University of Montana. Now, campus leaders have one month to figure out how to trim spending before the new budget year begins. The tuition increase means MSU will face more than $1 million in spending cuts. If tuition had been frozen, the university would have had to cut $2.5 million. Jim Rimpau is chairman of the budget committee and MSU's vice president for planning. He says the group will try to decide in general terms how to distribute the cuts between the major campus operations. Those include academics, research, student affairs and administration.
