CALIF LIGHT RAIL CRASH Officials probe train accident that injured 48

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) officials are investigating the crash of two light-rail trains in San Francisco.

One train crashed into the rear of the other at a boarding platform Saturday, injuring at least 48 people.

Officials say four people had what appeared to be severe injuries, including the operator of one of the single-car trains.

Witnesses say his train was coming out of a tunnel that connects downtown San Francisco with a busy western shopping district when it barreled into the back of the other train. Witnesses indicate it had either been stopped at the platform or was moving slowly.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

AFGHAN-SOLDIER CAPTURED Defense officials confirm Taliban video shows captive US soldier

Washington (AP) Two U.S. defense officials confirm the man in a video posted by the Taliban is an American soldier who went missing from his base in eastern Afghanistan last month.

It's the first glimpse the public has had of the captured soldier.

The soldier is shown in the 28-minute video sitting and dressed in a nondescript, gray outfit.

He's interviewed in English by his captors, and is asked his views on the war, which he calls extremely hard, his desire to learn more about Islam and the morale of American soldiers, which he says is low.

Asked how he's doing, the soldier says he's "scared" he won't be able to go home. He later chokes up when discussing his family and his hope of marrying his girlfriend.

The soldier's identity has not yet been released by the Pentagon pending notification of members of Congress and the soldier's family.

A U.S. military official in Kabul says the U.S. is doing everything it can to get the soldier back safely.

BANKS BAILOUT Government watchdog calls for more detailed survey of banks

WASHINGTON (AP) The watchdog overseeing the government's financial bailout is calling on the Treasury Department to seek more information from banks that receive taxpayer assistance.

Special Inspector General Neil Barofsky cites his own bank survey as evidence that such data can be obtained.

More than eight out of 10 banks responding to Barofsky's survey say money they received from the government has been used for loans or to avoid reduced lending.

The law that created the bailout fund did not require banks to track how the assistance was used, though Congress' intent was to increase loans, either directly or by unclogging credit markets.

But there is no process in place to make sure the money is specifically used to boost lending. And there are no consequences for banks that don't use it to that end.

ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS Netanyahu says no to US request to halt east Jerusalem project

JERUSALEM (AP) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel can build anywhere in Jerusalem.

His response to a request from Washington will likely to complicate an unusually tense standoff with the U.S. over settlement construction.

The U.S. has demanded that Israel suspend a contentious building project in east Jerusalem because it would hurt peacemaking.

The Palestinians see the city's eastern sector as capital of a hoped-for state and oppose any Jewish construction there. Israel captured east Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed it that same year.

Netanyahu told his Cabinet today that Israel's sovereignty over all of Jerusalem was "indisputable." The Israeli leader says, "We cannot accept the fact that Jews wouldn't be entitled to live and buy anywhere in Jerusalem."

PALESTINIANS-AL-JAZEERA NEW: Ban on Al-Jazeera operations in West Bank lifted

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) Al-Jazeera is being allowed to resume operations in the West Bank. Palestinian authorities banned the Arab satellite station last Wednesday over a report linking President Mahmoud Abbas to the death of Yasser Arafat.

An Al-Jazeera correspondent says he received a phone call from Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad informing him of the decision. But the reporter says Fayyad told him the government would still press ahead with a lawsuit for alleged incitement.

Last week, an Al-Jazeera talk show hosted an exiled official in Abbas' Fatah movement who alleged the Palestinian leader played a role in the death of Arafat in 2004.

The 75-year-old Arafat fell violently ill at his West Bank compound. He was transferred to a French hospital where he died several weeks later.

MYANMAR-MARTYR'S DAY NEW: Myanmar detains dozens of opposition members

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) Witnesses say Myanmar authorities detained dozens of members of the opposition party as they returned home from ceremonies to mark the death of the father of jailed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Witnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity fearing reprisals, say at least 50 National League for Democracy members were arrested Sunday.

They said some had been attending a ceremony at party headquarters in Yangon to mark the death 62 years ago of Gen. Aung San. Others had been at an official commemoration at a monument dedicated to the independence hero.

It was not immediately clear why police detained them.

Aung San was assassinated July 19, 1947, shortly after Britain granted independence to the Southeast Asian colony.

MURDER-SUICIDE LA police: Mother kills 4-year-old son then self

LOS ANGELES (AP) Authorities say a 4-year-old boy in Los Angeles has been stabbed to death by his mother, who then slit her own wrists and died.

Police spokeswoman Sara Faden says the boy and his 43-year-old mother were discovered Saturday morning at a home in the Garvanza neighborhood northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Police said the boy had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife and the mother's wrists sustained cuts that were apparently self-inflicted.

Both the mother and son were pronounced dead at the scene, and their bodies were removed by coroner's officials Saturday afternoon.

GOVERNORS CONVENTION Govs: Federal stimulus helped states plug budgets

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) About half the nation's governors are attending the National Governors Association convention under way in Biloxi, Miss.

And a big topic of discussion has been the federal stimulus package. Most of the governors are saying it helped them avoid deep budget cuts. But some also say they don't think there's going to be a push for a second round of help. Mississippi's Republican Gov.

Haley Barbour says he doesn't think there's a need for it.

Vermont Republican Jim Douglas notes the federal government attached a lot of rules to how the stimulus money could be spent, directing much of it to Medicaid and education. Douglas says because of differing priorities, governors would prefer more flexibility.

Some governors are skipping the conference to work on budget problems back home. Among them, Pennsylvania Democrat Ed Rendell.

He's the group's president.

SC GOVERNOR Cheating SC gov says God will make him better

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has written in an opinion piece that God is changing him.

He says he's hoping to emerge from the scandal of his extramarital affair a more humble and effective leader.

Sanford wrote in an opinion piece Sunday he feels he's had to attend his own funeral, and he's thankful for that perspective. The piece was distributed statewide for Sunday papers.

The Republican returned from a mysterious, nearly weeklong disappearance last month to reveal a romance with a long-time friend in Argentina. He has described the woman as his "soul mate" but said he would work to repair his relationship with his wife, Jenny. Sanford vows to work with lawmakers he's long fought.

But legislators say they've heard it before, and such pledges have always disintegrated quickly. His critics doubt he knows how to compromise.

SWINE Flu-FLORIDA NEW: Baby of woman with swine flu dies; mother critical

WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) The baby of a pregnant Florida woman with swine flu has died after hospital officials say doctors tried to deliver the child.

A press release from the Wellington Regional Medical Center says the mother, Aubrey Opdyke, remains in critical condition. Doctors placed her in a coma to give the 26-week-old baby maximum oxygen as the mother struggled with the virus.

Though the baby was not due for another 14 weeks, the press release said doctors had made the decision to deliver the baby yesterday morning.

No further details were released.

Health officials say more than a dozen people have died in Florida from swine flu complications and more than 2,100 have been sickened since the outbreak emerged.

MANDELA CONCERT NEW: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, others perform at NYC Mandela concert

NEW YORK (AP) A flock of global entertainment notables and politicos have toasted Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday with an all-star concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The Saturday night tribute celebrated the anti-apartheid icon's birthday with a diverse collection of musical collaborations that ranged from pop to disco to gospel.

The first lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, sang as her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, sat in the audience.

Other performers included Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Gloria Gaynor, Stevie Wonder, Jesse McCartney and Queen Latifah.

Mandela appeared last year for a concert in London's Hyde Park to celebrate his 90th birthday. But since then, Mandela's doctors advised that he no longer travel internationally.
