Dungy out, Caldwell in...Broncos pick Pats offensive guru...Cards lose Spac...Jan 13 2009 4:47AM
Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Jim Caldwell is the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts following Tony Dungy's (DUHN'-jeez) resignation yesterday. Caldwell spent the past eight seasons on Dungy's staff, becoming associate head coach last January after seven years as the quarterbacks coach. The Colts won Super Bowl 41 and went to the playoffs in each of their seven seasons under Dungy. DENVER (AP) The Denver Broncos have chosen New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their new head coach, giving him a four-year deal. The Pats had a record-setting offense under McDaniels in 2007, scoring 75 touchdowns and 589 points. McDaniels replaces Mike Shanahan, who was 146-and-91 with two Super Bowl victories in 14 years. UNDATED (AP) A knee injury will keep Cardinals starting tight end Stephen Spach (spahk) off the field for the rest of the postseason. Spach tore his right anterior cruciate ligament while blocking in the second half of Arizona's 33-13 victory over Carolina on Saturday night. He had a clinching 23-yard catch on a third-and-16 situation late in Arizona's 30-24 wild-card victory over Atlanta Jan. 3. NEW YORK (AP) Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown this summer. Henderson was elected on his first try, named on 94.8 of the ballots after setting major league all-time records with 1,406 stolen bases and 2,295 runs scored. Rice finally was elected on his 15th and final try, recognized for his .298 career average, 382 homers and 1,451 RBIs. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia (SOH'-shuh) has accepted a contract extension that runs through the 2018 season, although he can opt out of the deal after 2015. Scioscia is the only manager to win a World Series with the Angels, doing it in 2002. L.A. is 803-and-655 in nine years under Scioscia and has won four of the last five AL West titles.
