Crabtree going...Mays staying...Spaziani celebrating

PLANO, Texas (AP) After winning the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver as a freshman and a sophomore at Texas Tech, Michael Crabtree says he's headed to the NFL. The two-time All-American caught 231 passes for 3,127 yards and 41 touchdowns over his two seasons, setting numerous school and national records.

LOS ANGELES (AP) All-American safety Taylor Mays has decided to return to Southern California for his senior season rather than turn pro. A three-year starter for the Trojans, Mays was one of three finalists for the Thorpe Award as the country's top defensive back.

BOSTON (AP) Frank Spaziani has been promoted to head Football coach by Boston College after 12 seasons as an assistant coach with the Eagles. He replaces Jeff Jagodzinski (jay-guh-ZIN'-skee), who was fired following his interview for the New York Jets' coaching job after being warned by BC's athletic director not to speak with the NFL club.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Jim Caldwell was introduced as the Colts' new coach today, less than 24 hours after his former boss retired.

The Colts had announced their succession plan last year when Caldwell was elevated to associate head coach. The 53-year-old Caldwell says he wants to build on Tony Dungy's success, not be a carbon copy of his former boss.

Washington (AP) Washington Wizards center Etan (eh-TAHN') Thomas tore a ligament in his left knee during last night's loss to Milwaukee and will be sidelined indefinitely. It's the latest setback for a last-place team already without Gilbert Arenas, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson.
