Al Bortke's Last DayJun 30 2009 7:09PM
KXMBTV Bismarck but Al Bortke sure gave it a good run! After 36 years at the University of Mary, the former Basketball coach and Athletic Director has retired. His last day was today and what a way to go out... as hundreds stopped by a reception at the Benedictine Center to say goodbye and good luck. For the last 12 months, Bortke was the Associate Athletic Director... and even in retirement, he won't be a stranger. "(Al Bortke:) It has gone in a wirlwind day and so much the fact that I am going to have to come out in a day or two and probably clean out my office a little bit. I am hopefully that something will go through and as Rog says, just sit back and help special things like homecoming and hall of fame and maybe even having an opportunity to work with our alumni." When Bortke stepped down as a head coach in 1989. One person replaced him. With his departure as Associate A.D., U-Mary is planning on filling his spot with TWO people!
