Lillian "Lilly" Weigel Schmidt • 1931- 2006

Lillian "Lilly" Weigel Schmidt, 74, 905 15 ½ Ave. SW, Minot, died Thursday, April 6, 2006 at her home.

Lillian Weigel was born on June 18, 1931, to Benhard and Katherine (Ehli) Weigel near Selz, ND in Pierce County, ND. She attended school in Rural Selz until the second grade. The family moved to Harvey, ND in 1939 where she attended St. Cecelia's Catholic School and graduated from the eighth grade. She then attended Harvey High School and graduated in 1950. Upon her graduation, she was engaged to LeRoy Schmidt, who was serving the US Military overseas, during the Korean Conflict. She moved to Minot where she attended the Sisters of St. Frances School of Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital graduating in 1953 as a registered nurse as was employed at St. Aloisus Hospital in Harvey.

On January 12, 1954, she married LeRoy O. Schmidt in Harvey, ND, where they lived until moving to Minot in May of 1956. Her husband, LeRoy, worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and Lilly worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital

In 1968, she went to work at Medical Arts Clinic for 25 years, first as a registered nurse for Dr. Russell Odegard, Dr. Dale Flickinger and Dr. Frank Shipley and later as patient service nurse for two years. She retired on December 31, 1992.

Lilly was a founding member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot and was active on the Pastoral Care Committee, Parish Nurse program, St. Bridget's Altar Society, Prepare for Pre-Marriage Couples and helped with Mass at Trinity Nursing Home. She was past president of the association for Handicapped Citizens, the Sisters of St. Frances Alumni Association and the Minot Parents for Handicapped Association. She was a member of the Prairie Federal Credit Union Supervisory Committee, NARVRE (National Association of Railroad Retirees), and the Human Rights committee at the Minot Vocational Workshop. She volunteered with the American Red Cross, the North Dakota Handicapped Association, the American Cancer Society, the Reach to Recovery/Women's Way and was a six year volunteer with NDCPD (North Dakota Center of People with Disabilities) at Minot State University.

Lilly led a life of serving others in her personal, spiritual and professional life. Friends and extended family knew her energy, humor and warm concern of others to revolve around her strong faith. Lilly shared her love most generously with her husband, children and grandchildren by being a part of their everyday lives. She moved about, showing a sincere interest in all that they did. She truly enjoyed taking part in the many activities surrounding her close, fun loving family. Her greatest contribution to our lives was following the fine example of her unwavering faith in God and love of all others. In her circle of friends, co-workers and patients, she touched more lives than we will ever know.

Survivors: Husband of 52 years, LeRoy Schmidt, Minot; Children, son, Ron (Julie Vetter) Schmidt, Minot, and their children, Ian and Aaron Schmidt and Blake and Kayla Vetter; son, Jerry (Claudie) Schmidt, Minot, and their children, Brienne, Kaylee and Jacob; daughter, Nancy (Jeff) Schmidt, Minot and their children, Casey, Matthew, Stephanie, and Abbie Schmidt and son, Doug Schmidt, Minot; brothers and sisters, Edward (Marty) Weigel, Harvey, ND, George (Christine) Weigel, Minot, Isabella Schmitz, Minot, and Buddy (Betty) Weigel, Atlanta, GA. Sisters-in-law, Orabell Weigel, Utah, Catherine Weigel, Tacoma, WA, Judy Weigel, Tacoma, WA and Eileen Weigel, Tacoma, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, John Weigel, Ray Weigel, Rose Heilman, Katie Lamm, Tony Weigel and Daniel Weigel.

She was also survived by her constant companion, Kasper.

Vigil Prayer Service: Sunday, April 9, 2006 at 4 p.m

at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Mass of Christian Burial: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, ND on Monday, April 10, 2006 at 10 a.m.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND

Visitation: Saturday, April 8, 2006 from noon until 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 2 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot and starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minot Vocational Workshop or Reach to Recovery/Woman's Way.
