Some of the GOP senators who helped block debate over the non-binding resolution against Bush’s surgescamalationist strategery flip-flopped and now want to promote debate.

They’ve sent a letter to Harry Reid, the Senate Majority leader, “threatening” to attach the non-binding measure to any bill that comes to the Senate floor.

The Senate was poised to debate a nonbinding resolution opposing the additional troop deployment and calling for a diplomatic initiative to settle the conflict in Iraq. Republicans refused to allow the resolution to reach the floor, relying on a standard procedural objection.

Five of the seven Senate signatories to yesterday’s letter — including Warner, the bipartisan resolution’s chief author — had voted Monday to block the debate.

This is all very lol-tastic.

First, the resolutions being debated are non-binding. Most of the Democrats don’t have the cajones to propose a bill to really end the failed war of aggression in Iraq and hold Bush accountable for his administration’s myriad mistakes and lies.

Second, the GOP senators who flip-flopped are mostly worried about their upcoming ‘08 elections. This drama gives them political cover they can use. “Oh, we weren’t really in favor the war - see, we tried to debate a non-binding resolution expressing mild disapproval of the surge!”

Third, the Democrats have the majority. They ought to introduce legislation every single day to cut off funding for the Iraq war and funnel all the military’s expertise and training into Afghanistan, where hopefully it’s not too late to accomplish something positive. Is six years long enough to finally start finding Osama bin Laden?
