Sen. Kent Conrad will hold community forums in Grand Forks and Bismarck on Monday, May 14 to gather input on the next Farm Bill. That's next Monday, and you're invited to attend.

The event in Grand Forks will begin at 9 a.m. and take place at the Alerus Center, 1200 42nd St. S. The Bismarck event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and take place at the Radisson Hotel, 605 E. Broadway Ave.

Conrad said this in a news release yesterday regarding the forums:

"Agriculture is the largest sector of our state's economy, and I am going to do everything I can to make sure North Dakota's voice is heard before Congress begins debate on this extremely important bill," Senator Conrad said. "These farm forums aren't just for farming and ranching families - they are for everyone who has a stake in North Dakota."

Sen. Byron Dorgan and Rep. Earl Pomeroy will also make sure North Dakota's voice is heard. Dorgan grew up in Regent, which is an agricultural hot spot. And Pomeroy serves on the House Agriculture Committee.

Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson, who will be at Monday's forums, will also work on the new Farm Bill. In fact, Johnson will be president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture when the new Farm Bill is being authored.

Presidential candidates

I'm sure you all have noticed how hard the Democratic presidential candidates have been working. They want to win and are starting their campaigning early. Here at headquarters, we've been contacted by the Clinton, Edwards' and Obama campaigns already.

So far, polls placed in these news briefs say people favor the Democratic presidential candidates to the Republicans. Do you think President Bush has anything to do with that?

The 2008 presidential election couldn't come soon enough in my opinion. It means the end of the Bush administration and the beginning of a Democrat in the White House.

If you are helping with one of these campaigns, be sure to keep headquarters abreast of any ongoing events. We'll post them on the party's Web site.

Gas prices

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee approved an amendment by Sen. Byron Dorgan to crack down on price gouging at the pump. Here's an explanation of the amendment from a news release via Dorgan's office:

The amendment gives the president authority to declare a national energy emergency and make it illegal for suppliers to sell crude oil and gasoline at excessive prices in areas declared to be experiencing an energy emergency. It also gives the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general greater authority to investigate price gouging year round. | save this article / add to your favorites list
