Lawmakers hear about a new drug

It's a plant some are using to get high.

It's called salvia divinorum.

Lawmakers get a lesson on what it is and what it does today.

A bill would make the plant illegal.

No one who testified in support of the bill really knows much about salvia divinorum, other than what they've found on the internet.

According to Wikipedia, salvia divinorum gives users a psychedelic experience.

The peak is felt a minute after it's consumed.

It can be chewed, swallowed or crushed to be smoked.

(Sen. Randy Christmann / (R) Hazen) "This idea came from a superintendent who contacted me and was aware of some school students using this and felt we need to stop this before it gets to be a huge problem not after it gets to be a huge problem."

We even found salvia divinorum plants for sale on ebay.

Salvia is considered a controlled substance in six states.

Jeff White with BCI says one sample has been sent into the state crime lab. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list

in other words dont ban salvia and legalize the medical use of cannibus-peace

well banning the herb is only going to draw alot more attention to it, it will be sought after via the black market, you will here of more and more people using it. Sen. Randy Christmann why don't you go attack substances that actually are dangerous like alcohol for instance which kills an average of 85,000 people a year. Or maybe you can lash out at the tobacco companies, oh wait you can't do that because you would lose credibility among your fellow republicans.

Posted by riffraff on Feb 6 2007 8:07AM - I have no doubt that salvia will be illegal in every state pretty soon. It's quite clear that tobacco and alcohol are the only recreational drugs that those in charge want available to americans. I agree with ya willy. Except maybe unfortunately for you, I'm going to recommend the minimum smoking age as 21, or 18 and move alcohol to 18 as well, as I'm a big fan of consistency for the two substances.

Salvia is never going to be a "huge problem". It's never going to be widely used or used regularly by any one person. Most people I've known that have used it have only done it once. You guys are probably right that making it illegal will probably draw more people to it, and for sure it isn't going to prevent someone who wants to use it from using it. Just another example of making more criminals out of people that are not really criminals. Salvia is legal right now, it's not ruining our society is it?

Posted by LaRae on Feb 6 2007 6:36PM - This is all a silly argument. Salvia only makes a person trip for a few moments, it is a pretty lame drug for those who like to trip. It is also really spendy, drug users would rather buy a bag of pot then salvia. Waisting money to ban a drug that isn't really cool to use anyway is stupid. Not too many people will care if salvia is illegal or not.

Posted by william mcmahon on Feb 9 2007 4:51PM - the US blows ND is old fashioned and governments are corrupted

Posted by joe sanders on Apr 6 2007 4:15AM - So this is what our country has come to. THIS is where our tax money goes. Oh im so thankfull that we live in the best country in the world because we sure are the best. Go ahead walk down the the road and take a look at the meth heads. Have a good talk with them. Focus on that. We should be helping each other out instead of making dumb law after dumb law. For example, a crack head on the streat NEEDS HELP. They are crying out for your help. What do you do, you fine them and put them in jail to pay for the dea that is looking these people. Give up, the war on drugs failed. Is it so hard to take your self out of your little box and realize that the government and authorities created most of the voilance in the use. Think about it!!! You illigalize alcahol and it created gangs then you said well this isnt working so you repealed it. How many rights do you have to take away from us. How far will this go. Is it actually a right, if you take it away with out any rime or reason behind it. You will see how many more people will use salvia after its illigelized. And guess what you probley will start more gangs. Im sick and desusted with the way this country and world is going. We stoll this land from the native americans, shouved them in a corner and hurded slaves to do our work. That is all over now and we are people. Your body is your body. My body is my body. Wake up, wake up, wake up, please wake up usa or it won't work. We must come together instead of fighting over things that don't matter. have a great day

-non-toxic
-non-addictive
-the only conceivable downside is a slight increase a pulse pressure, something that needs to be studied further

Salvia divinorum is safe. People can die from an overdose of alcohol or nicotine, or even(in rare cases caffeine)
There is no sufficient reason to ban such a relatively harmless substance.
