GOP Arrogance

Scathing editorial in the Fargo Forum this morning about the ND GOP's power-happy move to lower the bar so any hack can run for the office of North Dakota's Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Here's the Forum: Dr. Wayne Sanstead, a Democrat, has held the job since 1984. Republicans have tried again and again to unseat him, sometimes with very good candidates, such as Sen. Ray Holmberg, R-Grand Forks. But the voters overwhelmingly returned Sanstead to office. Apparently Republicans decided that if they can’t beat him at the polls with a qualified candidate, they would have to find a way to beat him with an unqualified candidate. And that’s what the party-line approval of the legislation was all about.“Not restrict the field of possible office holders,” said bill sponsor Rep. Duane DeKrey, R-Pettibone. Nice try. The bill is the worst kind of special interest legislation because it’s singularly driven by a political agenda. It’s no secret that House Education Committee Chairman Rep. Raeann Kelsch, R-Mandan, wants Sanstead’s job. It’s safe to conclude her work as manager for a cell phone company has not afforded her many (any?) hours in a public school classroom.North Dakotans want their agriculture commissioner to be a farmer. They insist by law that their judges and attorney general be lawyers. The state health officer is a doctor. It’s common sense that the state’s top public education official should include on his/her resume a current teaching credential.Fargo Forum (http://www.in-forum.com/Opinion/articles/160364) [emphasis added]Here's me, trying to see if I can dig something from the deep recesses of what's left of my college memories. It's something I thought I learned in my Logic 101 class at UND:None of the candidates Republicans can use to beat Dr. Sanstead are qualified. One of the candidates Republicans intend to use to try to beat Dr. Sanstead is Raeann Kelsch. Conclusion: Raeann Kelsch is unqualified Did I get that right, Professor Messenger? | save this article / add to your favorites list
