One of the attractions at Norsk Hostfest is the wide variety of artisans who display their crafts each year.



And this year, the Hostfest is giving you a chance to get a hands-on lesson in creating unique items.



Reporter Clayton Clark is experiencing the Hostfest for the first time, and he took advantage of the hands-on offer to learn some paddle-making today...





(Clayton Clark, KX News) "It was my first time at the Hostfest. There is so much to do and I had no clue where to go first. Luckily for me I found something pretty crafty. Peter from the North House Folk School is a master crafter with any sharp tool and a nice piece of wood. He was about to show me how to carve a paddle out of just a chunk of tree."



(Peter Brasness, North House Folk School) "You start out with a plan, what type of paddle you want. Then it's a matter of laying out the pattern and then beginning to take a big piece of wood and make it smaller. Have you ever used one of these? This is called a spoke shave. They developed this kind of knife so they could take a square piece of wood and turn it into the wooden spokes they use on wheels."



(Clayton Clark, KX News) "With a short demonstration, a sharp tool, and a lot of faith...Peter gave me room to carve away."



(Peter Brasness, North House Folk School) " What you're going to try to do now is match this line down here with this one."



(Clayton Clark, KX News) "But it's a lot harder to do it. I needed a little more instruction before I got the hang of it."



(Clayton Clark, KX News) "Peter and I could have carved all day. And we would have had to in order to finish the paddle. But I'll let the pro finish the job."
