Eye on Health - Flood Clean-up HealthApr 19 2009 11:21PM
KXMCTV Minot It moves fast can destroy property and can make you sick. So....How to you stay healthy? That is the topic of tonight's Eye on Health with Perry Olson. (Perry Olson - KX News) Pretty much everything has been in the flood water across the state including cattle that means plenty of...well...who knows laying around. That means it is time to be careful. "People's tendencies are to rush out and clean up the house and take care of things right away but we need to worry about debris, sewer spillage, mice and rodent droppings are floating everywhere. It is important to clean up after being in flood water to make sure they are not bringing that back into the house as well." Perhaps the most vital is being up-to-date on your tetanus vaccination. You need one every ten years to protect against a serious illness. "Lock-jaw and tetanus are fatal diseases. They are rare and they can cause significant complications. If people are not current they should get that updated." A simple scrape can serve as an entry point for something like that...and with all the work the last week there are plenty of scrapes around. Taking a few moments to be safe is certainly worth the time. "The biggest thing is that you need to realize if you have been in the flood waters just know that there are lots of contaminants in the water and good hygiene is critical." For a complete listing of what you can do to stay safe cleaning up after the recent floods, visit the state Health Department website at www.ndhealth.gov/flood/ and this is a good idea too... "Maybe that would be a tip to have some clean water on hand when you are doing clean-up work as a precaution." Anything to stay safe...and enjoy the time when the water is back to normal.
