Eye on Health - No InfectionsApr 27 2009 8:39AM
KXMCTV Minot The Opthamologist recently reached an impressive number of cataract surgeries without one infection...a much bigger number than any of his colleagues around the country. But why? Perry Olson shows us what he is doing that might be behind that success in tonight's Eye on Health. An eye infection after a surgery like this you are watching a cataract surgery is not something you want... "Well the symptoms are pain and blurred vision and it is the most dreaded complication of doing any eye surgery." With no blood flow to eye that makes it even worse and more important to avoid...something Dr. Williams has been very good at. In fact, he passed 12000 surgeries without an infection. But why? Maybe because of a new technique he has adopted. "At the end of the surgery I take the self sealing incision and I hydrate it with fluid to build temporary pressure jamming it shut tight. I leave the pressure higher than average and what that does is seal it even better." He knows it is sealed because there is no fluid loss and with no fluid getting out no fluid possibly infected fluid is getting into the eye. "Because even if just a tiny microliter of fluid...that could have 10 thousand bacteria in it!" Is that for sure the reason he's stayed infection free? He can't be one hundred percent sure...but... "So the one thing I was doing differently than my colleagues had to do with extra time to seal in incision. But is very nice to go that many years without and infection." And that more than a decade's worth of surgeries he can be confident that his technique is working and something he'll continue to do...With your Eye on Health...Perry Olson, KX News.
