Eye on Health - Emergency SurgeryMay 31 2009 11:14PM
KXMCTV Minot Louis was severly injured in a freak motorcycle accident that nearly ripped his nose from his face and cut open his forehead. It sounds horrific and it was very serious but quick actions by his doctor has him on the mend now...and doing extremely well. Perry Olson has more with Louis and his doctor just over a month after that scary accident in today's Eye on Health. (Louis Schafer) "Dr. Ulloa put my nose back on, it was ripped completely off I guess." The pictures of that terrible accident are too graphic to show but Louis' description is right on and that meant lots of work for the doctor on call... (Dr. Juan Ulloa, DDS - Trinity Health) "The main key was to make sure the arteries that supply blood are hooked up. That was the critical part. I told him I would do my best but could not guarentee he'd have a nose after surgery." But that surgery went well...and as time passed...everything seemed to be progressing perfectly. (Dr. Ulloa) "He just literally went from losing his nose to being reconstructed with local tissue on the forehead and the nose back attatched in a functional and good way that is acceptable." Louis has a very positive outlook on life and this situation, but he was still stunned when he looked in the mirror for the first time. (Louis) "I was real suprised at how good I looked. I thought we were going to see Frankinstien when I looked in the mirror..." But it certainly isn't that...and he thanks Dr. Ulloa for literally sewing him back together. (Louis) "If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have a nose right now for sure. There would be a big hole in my face." He says he will ride again...but with one extra piece of equipment on... (Louis) "If they make a helmet that comes down to here I am going to wear one!"
