Puerto Rico lawmakers OK strict drunk driving lawOct 30 2009 10:37AM
Associated Press SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Puerto Rico lawmakers have voted to adopt one of the world's lowest legal limits for drunk driving. The House of Representatives passed a bill lowering the blood alcohol limit to .02 percent from the standard .08 percent. The measure still needs approval of the territory's Senate and governor. Mothers Against Drunk Driving says .02 percent would be lower than any U.S. state. Sweden has had .02 percent limit since 1990. Rep. Johnny Mendez argues the measure is too strict. He said Friday the island should raise the legal drinking age to 21 instead of 18 as U.S. states have done. Puerto Rico has been considering measures such as closing bars earlier to curb drunk driving and late-night violence. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
