Psychiatrist says Rodriguez could make choices

Fargo, N.D. (AP) A psychiatrist testified for the government this morning in the trial of Alfonso Rodriguez Junior saying he does not believe Rodriguez has a major mental illness.

Doctor Steven Pitt said he interviewed Rodriguez for five hours and researched files. He said Rodriguez has an anxiety disorder and sexual fantasies that include suffering or humiliation, but has shown he can make choices.

Pitt disputed earlier testimony from a defense psychologist, Marilyn Hutchinson, who said Rodriguez had a post-traumatic stress disorder.

Jurors are expected to start deliberating tomorrow over whether to sentence Rodriguez to death or to life in prison for the killing of University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN').

Jurors must be unanimous for Rodriguez to receive the death penalty or he will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
