White House: Afghan troop decision within weeksNov 1 2009 1:53PM
Associated Press David Axelrod tells CBS Obama is going though a "rigorous" decision-making process because he wants "to make sure that we have the right strategy." Some lawmakers are pushing Obama to act quickly and send more troops. Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Democrat turned independent, told CBS "it's time to send more help." On CNN, House Republican leader John Boehner (BAY'-nur) said the longer the decision takes, the greater the danger to U.S. troops already on the ground. The decision is being complicated by the presidential election saga in Afghanistan, where President Hamid Karzai's opponent in Saturday's runoff has just pulled out. But Axelrod says Karzai had been expected to win anyway, and the White House will "deal with the government that is there." % |
